Key Benefits
What is SCiB™ technology?
SCiB™ cells are the basic building blocks for Toshiba batteries. These cells can be arranged in series and/or parallel connections, to make up larger units called SCiB modules. Modules, in turn, can be arranged in series and/or parallel connections to achieve a complete battery system of desired voltage and capacity. The safety and reliability of our battery modules are of paramount importance. To achieve this, each module comes with an integrated Cell Management Unit (CMU) that handles balancing and temperature monitoring on individual cells. When these modules are arranged into battery strings, each string is further monitored by individual Battery Management Unit (BMU) for further safety.
Rather than traditional Lithium-Ion, we use Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) for the anode. This offers a high longevity that conventional batteries do not. Also, we deploy a special technology that ensures fire hazards are extremely low—even when a cell is crushed or punctured by external forces.
Very Long Battery Life
Over 70% maintained capacity after 20,000 charging and discharging cycles making it suitable for all applications that require frequent charging and discharging.
Safe Design
Lithium Titanate chemistry offers minimal heat generation from internal short circuits caused by external pressure and minimises any risk of fire or explosion. This makes the SCiB™ batteries suitable for e-mobility applications.
High Input & Output Current
SCiB™ batteries are capable of quick high power (current) charging and discharging thus making them suitable for e-vehicle starting and braking.
Rapid Charging
SCiB™ allows automobiles, buses and other e-vehicles to be charged as quickly as refilling a fuel-driven car. Typically, SCiB™ modules can be charged up to 80% SOC in 12 minutes.
Large State-of-Charge (SOC) Capacity
Excellent input/output characteristics over the entire range of SOC from 0% to 100%. This makes it possible to reduce the number of batteries required for a system. These batteries can be discharged to 0% capacity in emergency situations.
Wide Operating Temperature Range
SCiB™ operates reliably from -30°C to 55°C (discharge) and from -20°C to 55°C (charge). It is ideal for hot climates and can be used in cold climates with an internal heater.
- Improved safety
Our batteries are built on Lithium Titanate chemistry with a unique manufacturing technique, which means they present an extremely low risk of fire or explosion from internal short-circuits caused by external pressure. - Optimal longevity
With a lifespan of over 20,000 charge-discharge cycles, during which only a small degree of capacity degradation occurs, Toshiba SCiB™ system delivers a longer lifespan with a very low total cost of ownership. - High depth of discharge
SCiB™ batteries can be used to their full range of capacity, right up to 0% discharge. In comparison, conventional batteries often have limited useful range. - Rapid charging
With up to 10C capability, SCiB™ allows for extremely rapid charging. They can be charged to more than 80% capacity in just six minutes—just as quick as refilling a fuel-powered vehicle. Frequent rapid charging has no ill effects on the battery either. - Made for a wide range of temperatures
The batteries can be used in even the harshest of conditions, and remain usable up to 45°C, and in below-freezing temperatures down to -30°C. - Easy to implement with a turnkey system
Toshiba’s Battery Management Unit (BMU) looks after all the housekeeping for each battery string. Simply connect to your control system via Ethernet or CAN communication, and you are ready to go. - Ideal for a range of applications
SCiB™ batteries are designed to be used in a wide range of applications, where high power and high energy are required. When compared to conventional batteries, SCiB™ is ideal for use where high safety requirements are crucial, and rapid charging/discharging is necessary to keep their business running smoothly

Trams and trains
It’s not just conventional e-vehicles, either. With their high input and output capabilities together with rapid charging, SCiB™ batteries can be used to power trams and trains for daily use. The large rooftop surface of these transportation modes enables solar panels to be mounted to generate additional electricity for auxiliaries which can be stored in the batteries.
Underground mining
With their robust nature, safer materials, and longer lifespan, Toshiba SCiB™ batteries are already being utilised in electric vehicles on underground mine sites, where large energy capacity and low risk of fire are paramount.
Offshore applications
SCiB™ batteries have the power capacity to propel e-ferries and tugboats. Rapid charge means they can quickly charge when they reach the ferry wharf, and their wide temperature range ensures they can be used in even the harshest of marine environments.
Autonomous vehicles
With its 100% – 0% depth of discharge, rapid charging, and low risk fire safety, SCiB™ technology is ideal for Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Automatic Mobile Robots (AMRs). Their compact size means they can be used in vehicles where space is a constraint.
Industrial machinery
SCiB™ batteries can power industrial machinery that required a high power and energy output. They’re already being applied in our clients’ mining vehicles and machinery, construction equipment, cleaning equipment, and more.
Uninterrupted power supplies (UPS)
SCiB™ batteries can be implemented in smaller footprints for uninterrupted power supplies (UPS), helping to improve space utilisation in electrical rooms. Their high depth of charge ensures longer availability of power in emergency situations.
Solar lighting
With large energy capacity, SCiB™ delivers the perfect battery for standalone solar lighting in remote or inaccessible locations, and emergency lighting applications. With almost zero maintenance required, they’re effectively a set-and-forget solution—delivering a saving in time, money, and effort.
Energy storage
Thanks to their high depth of available capacity down to 0%, SCiB™ batteries are ideal for storing energy, and their performance remains unaffected over a wide temperature range.
