The overland conveyor that’s the first of its kind

If you head out to the west of Sydney, over the Blue Mountains and past Lithgow, you’ll find an overland conveyor belt winding its way over the landscape. This particular overland conveyor follows a graceful path over hills, past farmland and through forest, moving mining materials from pit to wash plant.

It's just one of many that’s powered by Toshiba. And at approximately 4km long, it’s not the longest in operation. Nor is it the newest. What’s special about this one is what’s driving it.

Toshiba believes that this overland conveyor may be the first in Australia that’s powered by Variable Speed Drive Motors.

About this Project

As the OEM for AGL's Bayswater Power Station in the New South Wales Hunter Valley, Toshiba supplied and installed upgraded turbine steam path equipment and completed generator rewinds at Bayswater to increase output by 25MW per unit with no additional fuel consumption.
 
Scope of Project
Toshiba supplied all labour, tooling, supervision, subcontractor and project management to successfully execute projects from 2019 to 2022, including over 120,000 hours of trades labour from Toshiba's subsidiary PGSR and provision of a required 300-tonne dual-crane stator lift. Toshiba made a global commitment in 2019 to transition our future manufacturing away from coal-fired thermal power equipment. As coal still plays an important role in the current energy mix, projects like Bayswater ensure our customers can navigate their way through the rapidly changing energy market while maintaining their commitment to safely keeping the lights on for the people of Australia.

On 25 May 2021, an incident occurred on Unit C4 at Callide Power Station near Biloela in Central Queensland, which resulted in substantial damage to the unit, forcing it offline and triggering outages at other units and stations across the state.
 
OUR SOLUTION TO PROJECT CHALLENGES

As the OEM for the Steam Turbine Generator (STG) equipment was commissioned in 2001, Toshiba was able to provide support to Callide Power Management (CS Energy & Intergen joint venture), as it began the process of returning the Unit to full service.

New Toshiba F1 transformer will play a pivotal role in increasing the transmission capacity on the Victoria to New South Wales interconnector.

Customer Challenges

AusNet was seeking a well-established transformer supplier in Australia to provide equipment on a critical project for the network. The required 1000MVA 500kV single phase autotransformer banks are amongst the largest transformers in Australia. The challenging environment presented by COVID-19 also meant that an experienced and transparent supplier was required to cater for the evolving global situation.
