VNI East Upgrade Project – F1 Transformer
Supply, delivery and installation

New Toshiba F1 transformer will play a pivotal role in increasing the transmission capacity on the Victoria to New South Wales interconnector.

More Detail

The project was a complex undertaking, with over 800 tonnes of equipment designed, manufactured and transported from China to Australia, including four 160 tonne transformer tanks. Nevertheless, Toshiba’s expertise in logistical management of very large transformers, meant that we were able to navigate the challenges of sea and road freight of heavy haulage cargo.

Despite the challenges posed by the effects of the pandemic, Toshiba were able to mitigate delays to the manufacturing and testing of the transformers, even with strict lockdown measures in place.

Toshiba’s proactive management of the risks associated with COVID-19 meant that the transformers were still delivered to site in a timely manner.

Customer Challenges

AusNet was seeking a well-established transformer supplier in Australia to provide equipment on a critical project for the network. The required 1000MVA 500kV single phase autotransformer banks are amongst the largest transformers in Australia. The challenging environment presented by COVID-19 also meant that an experienced and transparent supplier was required to cater for the evolving global situation.

Our Solution

By working with Toshiba, AusNet was able to mitigate the risks and delays posed by executing a critical infrastructure project during COVID restrictions. Toshiba’s experience delivering and installing our fleet of Australian 1000~1500MVA 500kV autotransformer banks to AusNet and other utilities formed a solid and reliable starting point. Toshiba’s local Australian project management and site installation teams worked closely with AusNet to keep the project going and ensure all AusNet’s needs were addressed despite travel bans and lockdowns.
